Smoke alarm beeping: what it means and how to stop it

Updated: 14 October 2026

A white smoke alarm on the ceiling of a landing near the stairs

A smoke alarm that chirps once in the middle of the night, and again a minute later: almost everyone has been there. It is usually harmless, but it is a warning you should not ignore. This article explains what the beeps mean, how to silence the alarm without losing your protection, and what the rules are.

What does the beep mean?

Smoke alarms use a few standard signals. What each one means differs per brand and is in the manual or on the alarm itself. Broadly:

One short chirp about every minute, often with a flashing light. On most alarms this means the battery is almost flat. It is by far the most common cause. Replace the battery.

Short chirps in a different rhythm, with a new battery. The battery may not be seated properly, or the alarm is signalling a fault or the end of its life. Some brands use a slightly different interval for this; check the manual.

A loud, continuous alarm. That is the real alarm. First check for smoke or fire. If there is nothing, read on under “Alarm without smoke”.

Why always at night?

It is not bad luck that the chirping starts at three in the morning. A nearly flat battery delivers less voltage when it is cold. The house cools down at night, the voltage drops just below the threshold, and the alarm starts warning. During the day, when it is warmer again, it sometimes stops. That makes it seem fine, but the battery really is almost flat.

How to silence it

  1. Find the right alarm. With interlinked alarms they sometimes all beep. Look at the lights: the one with the flat battery often flashes differently.
  2. Replace the battery with the same type. The type is shown inside the alarm or in the manual. Mind plus and minus.
  3. Press the test button until you hear the test tone. Now you know it works again.
  4. Still chirping? Take the battery out again, hold the test button for a few seconds to drain any remaining charge, and put the battery back. On many alarms that solves it.
  5. Check the date. Is the production date around ten years ago, or does the alarm have a sealed battery that cannot be replaced? Then replace the whole alarm.

Do not take the battery out to keep it quiet “for a while”. An alarm without a battery does not protect you, and you need it most at night, while you sleep.

Alarm without smoke

If the alarm goes off without smoke, these are the usual causes:

  • Steam or cooking fumes. An alarm close to the bathroom or an open kitchen reacts to vapour. Move it a few metres away. In the kitchen itself, a heat alarm is often a better choice.
  • Dust or an insect in the sensor. Vacuum the outside of the alarm gently with the brush attachment.
  • An old or faulty alarm. After about ten years the sensor becomes less reliable. Replace it.

If it keeps going off for no reason, do not put it in a drawer without its battery. Move it, or replace it with a type that suits that spot better.

What do the rules say?

That depends on where you live. In the Netherlands, smoke alarms have been mandatory in every home since 1 July 2022. According to the Dutch government, there must be one on every floor with a living room, bedroom or kitchen; an attic or basement used only for storage does not count. The owner is responsible, which in a rented home means the landlord.

The Dutch fire service advises hanging alarms on the escape route, usually the hall or landing towards the front or back door, and on the ceiling. The Dutch government mentions keeping at least 50 centimetres from a wall or corner and 30 centimetres from a light fitting.

Many other European countries have similar rules, some stricter, some only for new buildings or rentals. Check your national or local fire service for what applies to you. Whatever the rules, one alarm per bedroom is not usually required but does give an earlier warning.

Test them regularly

A smoke alarm only helps if it works. Press the test button regularly, for example once a month, and replace the battery when it sounds weak. A fixed moment helps you remember: many people do it when the clocks change, in March and October.

Also note when you bought or fitted the alarms. That way you know when the ten years are up without climbing a ladder.

How Domeaz helps

Add your smoke alarms to Domeaz as appliances, with their location, battery type and the date you fitted them. Plan “Test smoke alarms” as recurring maintenance, for example monthly or whenever the clocks change, and you get a reminder automatically and see who is taking care of it. And if you ever sell the home, you have an overview ready for your home file.

A year-round schedule for the rest of the home is in our home maintenance schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my smoke alarm chirp every minute?
A short chirp about once a minute, often with a flashing light, means on most alarms that the battery is almost flat. Replace the battery. If the alarm has a sealed battery, replace the whole alarm. The manual tells you what each signal means on your model.
Why does it always start beeping at night?
A nearly flat battery delivers less voltage when it is cold. The house cools down at night, and the battery drops just below the level at which the alarm starts warning.
It still beeps after a new battery, what now?
Check that the battery sits properly and is the right type, and press the test button. If it keeps beeping, look at the date on the alarm: smoke alarms last about ten years and often give their own end-of-life signal.
Are smoke alarms required by law?
It depends on the country. In the Netherlands, since 1 July 2022, every floor with a living room, bedroom or kitchen must have one, and landlords are responsible in rented homes. Many other European countries have similar rules; check your national or local fire service.
How long does a smoke alarm last?
About ten years. Most alarms show a production date or a replace-by date. An alarm with a sealed battery is replaced as a whole after that time.
